Australian Stud Book Red Flags – Strike Rate Winner

The response to our ‘red flags’ stories regarding factual data from the Australian Studbook has led to another story, this time highlighting a young stallion with an outstanding winner to runner strike rate.

Star Turn stands at Vinery Stud at a fee of $27,500.

A very fast sprinter that wasn’t quite good enough to win at Group I level, but was very competitive at his pet distance of 1100m, Star Turn was retired to Vinery Stud and his powerful sprinter’s physique ensured he was given a good opportunity for success at his $22,000 fee.

Star Turn sired 19 first crop winners from 41 runners to finish second to only Capitalist on the leading Australian First Season Sire by winners list for 2020/2021 and followed up the next season to post his first Group I winner when quality filly Startantes won the Group I Tatts Tiara.

His current crop of two year-olds is his smallest crop to date and despite the drop in numbers has produced three winners headed by slick Listed Inglis Nursery Stakes winner Saltaire, who is one of seven stakes-winners in total for Star Turn.

Star Turn remains super competitive in the third season sires division running third for winners and sixth for earnings with three stakes-winners this season in Alsephina, Me Me Lagarde and Saltaire, plus his Singapore stakes-winner Golden Monkey.

Star Turn runs at an impressive overall 72% winner to runner and 4.5% SW to runner which looks very favourable when you do the stats for comparison with his peers and with consistent numbers to come and a fee increase to $27,500 for his foals arriving this spring there is every reason to think Star Turn can settle into a long and fruitful career as a prolific sire of winners and stakes horses.

Also worth noting his stats for Hong Kong where he has had four winners from seven runners headed by Group III winning sprinter Cordyceps Six, so with the demise of Deep Field, Hong Kong buyers may well find themselves looking to the son of Star Witness.
