One to Watch – Muswellbrook

Tara Madgwick - Monday July 3

It’s no wonder that renowned breeder Catherine Remond elected to keep a share in this two year-old Deep Field filly that made a winning debut  at Muswellbrook on Monday.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Surprise Valley was well fancied in the juvenile event over 1000m and dashed to the line to hold out the race favourite Sir Remlap to win by a neck.

A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase for First Light Racing/Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott/Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Ashleigh Thoroughbreds draft, Surprise Valley has a large ownership group that includes her breeder Catherine Remond.

Surprise Valley was a $150,000 Magic Millions purchase.

She is the second winner from three foals to race from unraced Lonhro mare My Goodness, who was also bred by Mrs Remond from her former star racemare and producer Twiglet.

Twiglet was a multiple Group and Listed winner back in 1990 and was a great success at stud producing a pair of Group I winners in Fairy King Prawn and Easy Rocking as well as the stakes-winner Crevette, who delivered dual Group I winner Cosmic Endeavour.

My Goodness was the very last foal from Twiglet, born when she was 24 and the much-loved matriarch passed away not long after.

My Goodness produced a colt by the now pensioned Deep Field last spring and he is sure to be a most saleable yearling for next year given the limited edition nature of the progeny of his sire.
