Another Cup Victory for Zoumon

Tara Madgwick - Saturday July 1

Fresh from winning the Listed ATC McKell Cup (2000m) at Rosehill two weeks ago, progressive Zoustar gelding Zoumon added the $300,000 Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) to his tally at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained four year-old was well again rated by Tim Clark in front and kept up a good gallop to win by a length taking his overall record to seven wins and two placings from 19 starts with prizemoney topping $621,000.

"He's an absolute pleasure to ride, he's got a great attitude and he relaxes well during the race. So that makes my life very easy, I just have to sit and steer,” said Tim Clark.

"He was probably just waiting for something to come up to him, and every time the grey horse got to his hind quarters, I could feel him lift for me. He's come back in great order, he's got a couple of nice strong wins in a row now so I think Gai and Adrian will press onto the Grafton Cup with him."

It was the second stakes win for Zoumon, who will now chase further Black Type success with the Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 13 his likely next start.

A $360,000 Magic Millions purchase for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Racing/Mt Hallowell Stud from the Element Hill draft, Zoumon is the best of three winners from stakes-winning Monsun mare Monblue (GB), who sadly passed away last year.

A half-sister to two stakes-winners, Monblue is from Germans takes-winner Salonblue, who won up to 2000m and comes from a family packed with stakes-winning European stayers including 2022 Champion German 3YO Sammarco.

Zoumon is a first SW for his sire Zoustar at 2400m.

Zoumon is the first stakes-winner for Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar at the classic distance of 2400m.
