A Fourth Stakes Victory for Teofilo's Character

Mark Smith - Saturday June 24

While rarely a headline-grabber, the 4yo Teofilo (IRE) gelding Character has been a great money spinner for Godolphin, and he claimed a fourth-stakes success in Saturday's Listed Tattersall's Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Character has an affinity for Queensland, with three of his four stakes victories coming in the Sunshine State, including last season's Group II Queensland Guineas.

Ridden by Ryan Maloney for James Cummings, Character came the widest of all on the home turn. Launching down the centre of the track, the son of Teofilo (IRE) scored a fighting half-neck win from the 6yo Ocean Park mare Ocean Treaty, with the 4yo Pins mare Finepoint a short-neck back in third.

Character advances his record to six wins, two seconds, and three thirds from 28 starts with earnings of $731,040.

After winning the Listed Member's Hcp at Doomben in May 13, Character had little luck when seventh in the Listed Spear Chief Hcp at Eagle Farm at his most recent start.

"It is very good to see him back in the winners' stalls. He was very unlucky last start," stable representative Nacim Delmi said.

"He was caught back without cover, got back and couldn't get out.

"He pulled up very well, and James has been happy with him all week.

"Putting the blinkers back on him - he's won with them here before and won over 1800 metres, so the step up to 1600 was always going to help."

Ryan Maloney also noted Character was luckless last start.

"He was pretty stiff the other day. He got held up at a vital stage, and he got going when it was all over," Maloney said.

"I wasn't too concerned with the run. I knew I was on the right horse, but I had it in the back of my head that I didn't want to hit him. He found plenty riding without the whip. I had that in the back of my head, and it paid dividends.

"He's a big horse. He likes to be left alone and get into a rhythm like he was able to do today.

"I haven't had a lot of luck for him (James Cummings), and to get the luck today gets the monkey off the back."

Character is the first foal of the talented Medaglia d'Oro (USA) mare Monogram. A five-time winner Monogram is a half-sister to Group II ATC Pago Pago Stakes winner Tarquin (Hard Spun), out of Daanet Al Dunya (USA), a sister to Fantastic Light, the Horse of the Year and Champion Older Horse in Europe in 2001.

Daanet Al Dunya (USA) is also a half-sister to the Mr Prospector mare Wanice (USA), the granddam of Widen Stud's Group 1 BRC BTC Cup winner Your Song.

Monogram has a weanling colt by Ghaiyyath (IRE) and was covered by Kermadec last spring.
