Shalaa's Little Pumper Breaks Maiden for Fun

Mark Smith - Wednesday June 21

After winning the 2yo fillies division at Canterbury with Tropical Squall, Gai Waterhouse and Adrina Bott saddled the Colts and Geldings division winner with the Shalaa (IRE) gelding The Little Pumper.

Ridden by Tim Clark, The Little Pumper went coast to coast in a two-and-a-quarter length romp over the Mendelssohn (USA) gelding Sound The Siren with the All Too Hard debutant One Last Shot a half-neck back in third.

The Little Pumper was second on debut at Randwick in December before finishing sixth at Canterbury on February 1, after which he was gelded.

"It's a bit of fun coming here and winning the first two races for Tulloch Lodge," stable representative Neil Paine said.

'This little horse was coming back in class, and to win as he did shows his class.

"He was impressive how he stretched out in the last furlong."

"He has his mind on the job after being gelded, and the owners will have a lot of fun with him."

A $120,000 purchase for G Waterhouse / A Bott / Kestrel from the Valiant Stud (as agent for Mullaglass Stud) draft at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, The Little Pumper is the fifth winner from as many to race for the talented Redoute's Choice mare Sensibility who was second to Guelph in the Group 1 Flight Stakes.

The Little Pumper a $120,000 Inglis Classic yearling

A sister to stakes-winner Intrusion and a half to Group II VRC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Running Tall (Sebring), Sensibility's Castelvecchio colt was a $60,000 purchase for John Ramsay from the Valiant Stud draft at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Sensibility was covered last spring by St Mark's Basilica (FR).

Woodside Park Stud's new recruit Shalaa (IRE) came close to siring the winner of the Group II Coventry Stakes on the opening day of Royal Ascot when Army Ethos was edged out by the undefeated River Tiber.

In France, the Shalaa (IRE) filly Shalromy was second in the Group III Prix Texanita at Chantilly, and Prija was third in the Listed Prix Volterra at Longchamp.

Shalaa will stand his debut season at Woodside Park Stud for $22,000, including GST and payable on live foal.
