Mighty mare Winx nominated for Japan Cup

Ben Dorries - Tuesday October 17

Champion mare Winx has been nominated for the Group I Japan Cup next month but Chris Waller says it is "highly unlikely" she will travel to the Land Of The Rising Sun.

On the day Winx took another spin around Moonee Valley in preparation for her tilt at a third Cox Plate win, it was revealed the world's best turf horse had been nominated for the event at Tokyo racecourse on November 26.

Winx's regular partner Hugh Bowman is taking up a riding contract in Japan after the Melbourne spring carnival so he would be there to ride her.

Should Winx win the Cox Plate for a record-equalling third time, she would be eligible for a US$2 million prizemoney bonus in the 2400m Japanese weight-for-age event.

However, Waller says a Japanese mission is unlikely for his star mare who recently celebrated her 21st consecutive win in the Group I Turnbull Handicap.

Waller reportedly says she has been nominated for the Japan Cup as a "precaution".
