Sires by Bloodline – High Chaparral

Tara Madgwick - Friday June 9

The Epsom Derby was run last weekend and while many breeders may question how a mile and a half staying race for three year-olds in England has any possible relevance to us, it’s time to think again.

Epsom Derby winner High Chaparral (IRE) has made a huge impression on our racing and breeding industry.

In 2002, the Epsom Derby was won by Sadler’s Wells colt High Chaparral (IRE) and he was a regular shuttler to firstly New Zealand and then to Australia before his premature death in 2014 and has gone on to establish a burgeoning sireline in Australasia.

He has three genuinely top class elite stallions doing the business in So You Think, Toronado (IRE) and Dundeel and all three of them have produced Group I winners at 1600m or less, so to think this sireline is all about stamina is far from the truth. It’s about class and quality that transmit reliably over a broad spectrum of distance.

So You Think has the favourite in the Group I BRC Stradbroke Handicap on Saturday in Think About It and Dundeel already has a two time G1 winning juvenile this season in Militarize and has two live chances in the Group I BRC JJ Atkins in Tannhauser and Miracle of Love. Not to be left out, Toronado added a new G1 winning sprinter to his tally this season in Mariamia.

Dundeel has two G1 winning sons at stud that will have runners next season.

The first yearlings by the next generation of sires in this dynasty have sold this year with Super Seth, Castelvecchio and D’Argento set to have runners next season.
