One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 30

Purchased for $150,000 at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, this Shalaa (IRE) filly gained the biggest pedigree update of all when her year older half-brother came out and won three Group I races!

The Matthew Smith trained filly Twelfth Night is a half-sister to Hitotsu and the daughter of Shalaa did a good job on Tuesday to break the ice at Newcastle at her fourth start.

Held up for a run on the fence, she dived through late for Tyler Schiller to snatch a head win over the short priced favourite Galactic Legend.

Twelfth Night was bred and sold by Arrowfield, purchased by Mystery Downs/ Valiant Stud and runs for an ownership group headed by Frank and Christine Cook.

Twelft Night was a savvy $150,000 Inglis Classic purchase.

She is a half-sister to Hitotsu, who won both VRC and Australian Derbies as well as the Australian Guineas, and is the third winner from three foals to race from Love is Fickle, a half-sister to Group II winner Love Conquers All and stakes-winner She’s Meaner from Group I winner She’s a Meanie.

Her Castelvecchio yearling filly was passed in at Inglis Easter this year and after missing to Hitotsu’s sire Maurice in 2021, Love is Fickle appears to be back in foal to him now.

Twelfth Night is a promising winner for Shalaa, who has relocated to Woodside Park in Victoria and stands at a fee of $22,000.
