Without a win since the Group 1 Doomben Cup at Eagle Farm twelve months ago, Huetor (FR) went back-to-back in the $1,000,000 feature, which returned to its traditional home at Doomben on Saturday.
The favourite Zaaki was among the first beaten as James McDonald scrubbed his ears off before the home turn. With Ryan Maloney in the saddle, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Huetor (FR) (Archipenko) fought off the game Numerian (Holy Roman Emperor) by a neck with three-quarters of a length to the Derby-bound 3yo Kovalica (Ocean Park) in third.
“When he was bottled up in between runners at the six or seven hundred, we knew we had a fair bit to offer,” Paul Snowden said.
“Once he got out, we know he’s got a really good three hundred metre finish on him, and he used that late.
“I honestly think he’s only (just) coming good. He’s got another run in him. Last season it probably got the better of him in the Doomben Cup into The Q22, but I think this could be right up his alley in a couple of weeks.
That is where he will head as long as he pulls up well. He’ll tell us.
“He’s pretty special because he’s the first horse we bought of the overseas horses we’ve dabbled in.
He’s a dual Group 1 winner, and it gives us confidence that we’re buying the right horses to bring over.”
Ryan Maloney said everything fell into place.
“Couldn’t have panned out any better,” Maloney said.
“He’s not a horse you can bustle; he just resents it straight away. He loves to find his feet and get into his rhythm.
“It was great I had a sit on him the other day, I got a good understanding of him.
“I had two options in the run, I wasn’t too keen on following Duais so I could sit there and ride for a bit of luck or to my outside the opportunity just kept presenting itself. I had a cushy run. I thought I’ve done my job, and you can do the rest, and he did exactly that.
“He’s not one you can overly use with the whip, he just resents it, he just does what he has to do and that’s what you saw today.”
Huetor (FR) advances his record to seven wins, one second, and three thirds with earnings of $1,649,871.
Bred by Sarl Darpat France, Huetor (FR) is a half-brother to the 2019 Group 1 Longchamp Prix de l'Opera winner Villa Marina (Le Havre).
They are two of the six winners from ten to race out of the stakes-winning Peintre Celebre mare Briviesca.
The Group 1 HK Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner Archipenko (Kingmambo), died at Lanwades Stud in 2017 at the age of 13.
