Athelric Claims Ortensia Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday May 13

Godolphin’s four-year-old Exceed And Excel gelding Athelric earned a second stakes win when defeating the luckless Quantico in Saturday’s Listed Arrowfield Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Scone.

Ridden by Dylan Gibbons for James Cummings, Athelric darted through on the rails when the leader Malkovich rolled off. Jason Collet followed through on Quantico, but by the time he cleared  Malkovich, Athelric established a winning break.

Athelric defeated Quantico (I Am Invincible) by a short head, with the winner’s stablemate Andermatt (Snitzel) a half-length back in third.

The winner of the Listed BRC Queensland Day Stakes at Eagle Farm last June and the $300,000 The Warra (1000m) at Kembla Grange in November, Athelric advances his record to seven wins, three seconds and a third from 23 starts with earnings of $797,480.

Athelric is the only winner from three to race out of the winning Lonhro mare Ida, a $200,000 purchase by  Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock (BAFNZ) on behalf of Jonathon Munz when consigned by Godolphin to the 2021 National Broodmare Sale.

A sister to the Group II Tulloch Stakes winner Old North out of Vengeance Of Rain and Dizelle’s dual stakes-winning half-sister Bernicia, Ida was carrying a colt by Sidestep. After foaling a King’s Legacy filly last spring, Ida was covered by Street Boss (USA).
