Exceed and Excel Filly Wins G1 Newmarket 1000 Guineas

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 8

Godophin have had a big weekend with their fillies winning the Group I Kentucky Oaks with Pretty Mischievous and then the Group I Newmarket 1000 Guineas with Exceed and Excel filly Mawj.

Group I placed last season, Mawj took race fitness into the Guineas winning two races in Dubai in January and February before returning to the UK.

Ridden by Oisin Murphy, she scored a half length win over the favourite Tahiyra with a massive field of 20 lining up in the classic.

“Mawj had been doing good before the race. She is a tiny filly but she has a big heart. She is a Group 2 winner and is unbeaten in Dubai. We will keep the options open as I want to see how she comes back after the race but she is entered in the French Guineas, but that is too close, and she is also in the Irish Guineas,” said her trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

A Godolphin homebred, Mawj has five wins and two placings from eight starts and is the 18th Group I winner for champion sire Exceed and Excel.

She is a half-sister to dual Group I winner Modern Games and stakes-winner Modern News being the third stakes-winner for well bred New Approach mare Modern Ideals, a half-sister to Group I winner Ultra.

Turning 23 this year, Exceed and Excel is listed at Darley with a private fee this spring.
