Wootton Bassett 5YO Chindit Back With a Win

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 4

Now a five year-old stallion, quality miler Chindit has won at his first run of the year in each of four seasons of racing taking out the Listed Paradise Stakes (1m) at Ascot overnight prompting speculation he may race in Australia later in the year.

A Group winner at two, three and four, the Richard Hannon trained son of Wootton Bassett returned with a flourish to win by three-quarters of a length taking his record to seven wins from 17 starts.

“That’s the fourth year in a row he’s won and he’s much more relaxed,” said Richard Hannon.

“He would have preferred to get a lead but he had his own way in front.

“I think he will go for the Lockinge next, then the Queen Anne and maybe Australia at the end of the year.

“He’s an extremely reliable and very sound horse, and will make an extremely good stallion.

“There are a good few races down there (in Australia) as well as races like the Shadwell Mile round two bends in the US.”

Chindit was a 65,000 guinea purchases from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and is the first winner for Always a Dream, a winning Oasis Dream mare from the family of Group I Epsom Derby winner Motivator.

He is one of 31 stakes-winners by Wootton Bassett (GB), who returns to Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $93,500 with his first yearlings to sell here in 2024.

Wootton Bassett (GB) is coming back to Australia this spring.
