Tara Madgwick - Wednesday May 3

Kandinsky Abstract was the most expensive yearling in Australia last year when sold by Widden Stud for $3million at Inglis Easter and made a winning debut at Canterbury on Wednesday.

The full brother to Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner and Champion 3YO Filly Sunlight, Kandinsky Abstract has been a work in progress at the Chris Waller stable.

A powerful colt with a muscular physique, he’s been given time to mature and with two recent soft trials under his belt the 1200m colts maiden today was chosen as a starting point.

Kandinksy Abstract jumped well from gate one and settled behind the leaders on the fence for James McDonald as he has done in his trials and when angled into clear running let down with a strong surge to win by more than a length.

His win brought up a race to race juvenile double for his sire Zoustar with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly Zia also winning her debut by a neck over another Zoustar filly in Makena.

Purchased as a yearling by Tom Magnier, Kandinsky Abstract runs for Coolmore and partners and was ridden by James McDonald, who was also on the colt in both of his trials.

“He’s a very nice animal, he moves extremely well and has a great demeanour,” said McDonald.

“He’s going to have a bright future and I loved the way he executed his gallop. He relaxed well in behind the pace and showed a really good turn of foot.”

Stable representative Damien Fitton confirmed Queensland would be on the agenda for Kandinsky Abstract, who may follow in the footsteps of his sire Zoustar.

Also trained by Waller, Zoustar won in Sydney in the  first week of May before going to Brisbane to win the Group II BRC Sires Produce Stakes and finish second in the Group I BRC JJ Atkins.

“He’s a quality colt, of course he cost $3million, but he was bought by some very good judges in the industry and I think we have a very nice horse on our hands,” said Fitton, who indicated Queensland would be an option going forward..

“We’ll see how he comes through the run today and Chris will make a plan with the owners and we’ll make a call later in the week.”

Kandinsky Abstract topped the 2022 Inglis Australian Aster Yearling Sale.

Bred by Widden in partnership, Kandinsky Abstract is the seventh winner from eight to race from Group III winner Solar Charged, who is also the dam of triple Group I winner Sunlight, Group III winner Sisstar and stakes-placed Sheika and Dio.

Widden Stud sold the yearling Zoustar filly from Solar Charged for $2.6million at Magic Millions this year to Yu Long Investments and she has another colt to follow and is back in foal again to him again.

Coolmore and partners will be cheering Kandinsky Abstract going forward as they have Sunlight in the paddock at home having purchased her for $4.2million at the MM National Broodmare Sale in 2020.

Sunlight topped the 2020 MM National Broodmare Sale.

Her first foal, a colt by Justify (USA), sold for $1.4million at Magic Millions this year and her second is a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB). Sunlight is due to foal this spring to Home Affairs.
