Breednet Distance Sire Tables – Horses for Courses

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday April 11

As we come to the end of the Sydney Autumn Carnival we thought it was worth taking a closer look at the leading sire tables and while last year’s overall winner I Am Invincible sets the pace by winners, earnings and stakes-winners, a look at the distance range tables does highlight the success of some of our other sires.

I Am Invincible leads the way and he does it strictly with sprinter/ milers and plenty of them that often have the ability to step up at two, but invariably improve at three and given the chance to race on are often effective for years.

Savabeel, who is second on the list is much better known for his milers and classic / staying types, but in I Wish I Win, has produced a game changer. He won the recent G1 TJ Smith (1200m) and if the Peter Moody trained gelding was able to win The Everest later this year, he could make Savabeel very hard to beat for the Champion Sire title in 2024.

I Am Invincible on top and Scissor Kick is a one hit wonder on this list(Giga Kick), but the rest of these sires are the usual suspects in this distance range. Queenslanders Better Than Ready and Spirit of Boom make their presence felt in a very competitive division.

I Am Invincible on top again, but this is where we see So You Think and Savabeel start to hit their straps with the 1600m races falling into this category and Maurice (Jpn) makes an appearance offering the promise of more to come.

Bulllbars leads by virtue of Mr Brightside winning the two richest 1600m races in the country –Doncaster and All Star Mile and Pride of Dubai prominent in part to Dubai Honour winning both the Queen Elizabeth and Ranvet Stakes, but he has had 20 winners in this distance range which says something.

Savabeel, Dundeel, All Too Hard and So You Think all right in their wheelhouse at this distance range siring plenty of winners, plus their stakes horses.

Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Queen Elizabeth are the key races here and Outstrip leads thanks to Melbourne Cup hero Gold Trip. The sires that consistently get plenty of winners in this range are Savabeel, Dundeel, Tavistock and further down the list look for sires like Frankel, Fiorente (IRE), Redwood (GB), Pierro and Rebel Raider.
