Mares Clash a Ripper!

Tara Madgwick - Saturday April 8

The $1million Group I ATC Coolmore Legacy (1600m) at Randwick today has drawn a top class field of mares with superstar European import Alcohol Free (IRE) lining up against some of our very best, so this race is arguably the most interesting of the day.

5.4million guinea purchase Alcohol Free will rest her mettle against the best of our mares.

Alcohol Free (No Nay Never) is a four-time Group I winner from 1200 to a mile, but so is Kiwi bred Levante (NZ) and her last start fifth beaten less than a length in the G1 George Ryder to Anamoe indicates she can be right in the mix.

Can Levante continue the Kiwi bred domination at Randwick?

Levante has a date at the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale coming up and if she can beat Alcohol Free, who cost 5.4million guineas at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale last year, you would wonder how much money she might bring as a daughter of rising star Kiwi sire Proisir.

The Chris Waller trained duo of Fangirl (Sebring) and Hinged (Worthy Cause) have won nearly $5million between them and while Fangirl may sit this one out of the track is too heavy, Hinged is going to be hard to beat despite the gate.

She comes out of the Group I ATC Ranvet Stakes (2000m) where she finished fourth to Dubai Honour, Montefilia and Mo’Unga, so if one of that trio wins the Queen Elizabeth her form is going to be looking even better.

Dundeel is having an amazing season and while he’s never sired a female Group I winner, that could change with Hope in Your Heart.

A last start fourth in the Doncaster is good form for this race and she does deserve a G1 win!

Pride of Dubai has been enjoying a real purple patch this year and has two runners with legitimate claims in Sirileo Miss and Pride of Jenni, so if there is to be an upset they might be the ones to spring it.
