One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Thursday March 30

Soon heading to Hong Kong, Mark Newnham had one of his earliest Group I successes with classy So You Think filly Nakeeta Jane in the ATC Surround Stakes (1400m) and her full brother broke the ice at Newcastle on Thursday bringing a timely update for his sister, who sells at Inglis Easter next Monday.

Three year-old gelding Mindspace is more of a staying type than his brilliant sister and he relished the step out to 1850m to surge clear and win by more than a length for Tom Sherry over race favourite Gorgeous Zara at his fourth start.

Mindspace was a $310,000 Inglis Easter purchase for his trainer from the Davali Thoroughbreds draft and is the sixth winner from six foals to race from Group II placed Flying Spur mare Lustre Lady.

Lustre Lady is a grand-daughter of Group I Epsom Oaks winner Jet Ski Lady and while Nakeeta Jane was effective at distances less than 1600m, it’s not hard to see why Mindspace is leaning more towards being a staying type.

Davali Thoroughbreds will offer a lovely So You think filly from Lustre Lady as Lot 207 pictured above, while Coolmore will offer the first foal of Nakeeta Jane, a colt by Justify (USA) as Lot 261.
