Brazen Beau Filly Last Straw Makes Winning Debut at Warwick Farm

Mark Smith - Wednesday March 29

It looked a hard slog for the field of two-year-olds over 1300m on a rain-sodden track at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, but not so for the Brazen Beau debutant, Last Straw.

Ridden by Tom Sherry for John Sargent, Last Straw came from last with a barnstorming finish to defeat the Frosted (USA) colt Sheetice by a length, with the Tivaci gelding Kenology a neck back in third.

Sporting the yellow and white silks of Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock Australia, Last Straw prepped for her debut with four barrier trials.

“That was fantastic. I expected her to go well, but it’s always a surprise first-up,” Sargent said.

“Tom has done a lot of work on this horse. He trialled her and galloped her. She was slow out of the gates at her last trial but hit the line strongly.

“I had her full brother, and he liked the sting out of the track, so that helped today.

“I think she will get over a mile or more. I will speak with Steve O’Conner, Sir Owen Glenn’s manager, to see whether we put her aside or carry on.”

A homebred for Go Bloodstock, Last Straw is the third winner from as many to race from the Group III-placed Manhattan Rain mare Boundary.

A $150,000 purchase for Paul Moroney Bloodstock/Criterion Glenhaven from the Newhaven Park draft at the 2016 National Broodmare Sale, Boundary hails from the family of Charge Forward.

After failing to produce a foal in two seasons following Last Straw, Boundary was covered by Wild Ruler last spring.

Last Straw is the third 2yo winner of the season for Darley Stud’s Brazen Beau.
