$170,000 Dubious colt Tops MM Gold Coast March Finale

Media Release - Tuesday March 21

A colt by exciting freshman sire Dubious today sold for $170,000 and topped the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

The colt, catalogued as Lot 295, was offered through the draft of Waylon J Stud and Brisbane's leading trainer Tony Gollan and renowned bloodstock agent John Foote teamed up to secure him.

$170,000 Dubious colt from Care to Elaborate topped the sale.

The colt is the second foal of the unraced Rubick mare Care to Elaborate, a half sister to Silver Slipper placegetter Voilier. Further back it is the same family as the stakes winners Miss Zoe, Zenalicious and Utzon.

"We thought he was the nicest colt here at the sale," Gollan said. "He's a really good type of horse with a lot of quality."

"He reminded John and myself of the good Dubious that sold so well here in January (at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale)."

"He was a real stand out in the sale on type - we didn't know how much we'd have to pay to get him, but we're glad we were able to secure him."

Day Two of the sale today saw eight lots sell for six figure prices with the second top seller rounding out the sale as the highest priced filly - the Love Conquers All-Zekeza youngster.

Offered by Lucas Bloodstock, the sister to Defence Missile and half sister to Grey Defence, was knocked down to Grant Morgan's Ontrack Racing outfit in partnership with trainer David Vandyke for $140,000.

Morgan knows a thing or two about finding a good filly by Love Conquers All - he purchased his pin-up performing filly to date, the Group Two winner Savanna Amour.

Across the sale some 279 lots sold at a gross of over $10 million and average price of $36,052. The clearance rate, ever increasing, currently sits at 80.2 per cent.

Tony Gollan and John Foote were the leading buyers on total spend - outlaying $664,000 on eight purchases.

It was a tight race for leading vendor by gross with Lyndhurst Stud Farm ($1,461,500) edging Eureka Stud ($1,445,000) by a mere $16,500, while Lucas Bloodstock topped the vendor by average table (for 3 or more sold) at $68,600.

As expected the progeny of Better Than Ready ($1,951,500) and Spirit of Boom ($1,240,500) were the mainstays of the sale - their combined gross making up about 32 per cent of the entire sale.

"In regards to the last two days of selling - to gross $10 million and to clear close to 80 per cent is a very good achievement," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said.

"Our vendors were willing to meet the market and in most cases we had a buying bench that would support the vendors who were selling."

"The stallion roster here in Queensland is getting better and better and with further investment in mare quality by breeders the local industry has a lot to look forward to in the years to come."

"We would like to thank Racing Queensland and Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland for their support of the sale," Bowditch added. "QTIS is a fantastic scheme that deserves even further support than it receives from local participants."

Entries are currently open for the National Sale and anyone interested in nominating stock can do so here or speak to a member of the Magic Millions Bloodstock Department.
