Frankel Strikes Again with King Frankel in Parramatta Cup

Mark Smith - Saturday February 18

Seven days after Farooq opened his stakes account in the Listed SAJC Premier's Plate at Morphettville, Frankel (GB) struck again when King Frankel (IRE) scored a fighting win in the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Ridden by Tyler Schiller for Mark Nenham, King Frankel (IRE) gradually wore down the brave front-runner Banju (Benfica) by a half-neck, with Sacramento (Pierro) a length and a quarter back in third.

It was the third consecutive win for Darby Racing's 5yo son of Frankel, advancing his record to five wins, five seconds, and a third from 19 starts with earnings of $380,906.

“That was a great return. It didn’t work out the way everybody thought with Banju being a hard-fit horse,  proving hard to get past,” Newnham said.

“I thought Tyler timed his run well. It was a difficult position to be in when chasing down a tearaway leader. You don’t want to get there too soon and spend all your pennies chasing.

“He might come back here for the Sky High in three weeks, and then it will either be the Tancred or the Manion Cup into the Sydney Cup fourth up.”

A 280,000gns Tattersalls October yearling, King Frankel won one and was runner-up five times in ten starts for Mark Johnston.

His win came in a three-runner maiden over 10f at Pontefract, with the official margin being 32 lengths.

King Frankel's brother Eminent won the Group II Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville, and the Group III Craven Stakes at Newmarket, and was fourth in the Epsom Derby.

Bought to Australia by Sir Mark Todd, Eminent finished second to Avilius (GB) in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill.

King frankel is out of the Kingmambo mare You'll be Mine, which finished third in the Group 1 Fillies Mile at Ascot.

King Frankel (GB) is the 108th stakes-winner for Juddmonte Farms champion Frankel (GB).
