Camelot's Sword Drawn Strikes in Torney Night Cup

Mark Smith - Friday February 17

Mike Moroney had three runners in Friday night’s Listed Measure Engineering Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moone Valley and supplied the quinella with Swords Drawn and Nerve Not Verve.

Ridden by Craig Williams, Sword Drawn sat just off the pace set by stablemate Nerve Not Verve before hitting the front when turning for home.

The 7yo son of Camelot defeated the 7yo Shocking mare Nerve Not Verve by a one and three-quarter lengths, with the 7yo Masked Marvel gelding True Marvel (FR) a neck back in third.

A Listed stakes winner in New Zealand for Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray, Swords Drawn advances his record to seven wins, nine seconds, and three thirds from 42 starts with earnings of $468,854.

Ritchie had purchased the son of Camelot for $140,000 from the Cambridge Stud draft at Karaka in 2017.

Assistant trainer Glen Thompson said it was a reward for consistency.

“He deserved it; he has been racing consistently all prep,” Thompson said.

“Craig had him in a lovely spot, and he was just too good for them.

“I think the Adelaide Cup is on the cards, and he is also nominated for the Aukland Cup. Michael will work out a plan for him."

From the one crop left in Australia by Camelot (IRE), Swords Drawn is the best of five winners from seven to race for the Zabeel mare Sarvon.

Sword Drawn’s half-sister Savont (Exceed and Excel) is the dam of Group III winner, and multiple Group placed Vigor Winner (Declaration Of War).

Sarvon is a half-sister to Group 1 AJC Champagne Stakes winner Onemorenomore (Red Ransom) and the stakes-winning Fusaichi Pegasus colt Dr Green.

Greg Eurell purchased an Almanzor filly out of Sarvon for $120,000 at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. She has been named Cleopatra Link.
