Fastnet Mare to Follow for the Future

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 1

We’ve made much of Fastnet Rock mares in recent days and one that saluted at Canterbury on Wednesday in the Go Bloodstock colours could easily be a Group I producer of the future or the dam of a million dollar yearling.

Bred and retained to race by Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, Mystic Mermaid is a full sister to Champion NZ 2YO and 3YO Filly Avantage, a winner of 16 races and $1.9million, nine of those wins at Group I level.

Given the deeds of her older sister, much was expected of Mystic Mermaid, but sadly the four year-old does not have that sort of ability, but she is consistent and has found her level in the care of Chris Waller.

She scored her second win and first metro success when beating another Go Bloodstock colour bearer in Journalism by a neck in the Benchmark 72 event over 1580m.

With two wins and six placings from 12 starts, Mystic Mermaid has won over $105,000, but her real worth will be seen in years to come when she retires to stud.

Mystic Mermaid’s dam Asavant passed away in 2021 and her last two foals are an unnamed two year-old colt by Fastnet Rock that was passed in at Inglis Easter last year and a yearling filly also by Fastnet Rock that has been retained.

Mystic Mermaid’s famous older sister Avantage was sold for a whopping NZ$4.1 million when purchased by Tom Magnier of Coolmore via New Zealand Bloodstock’s online platform Gavelhouse Plus in 2021.

The stunning figure established a new world record for any horse sold online and Avantage has since settled into life at Coolmore producing a Wootton Bassett filly last spring before being covered by I Am Invincible.
