Russian Revolution's Red Resistance Goes Coast to Coast in Canonbury

Mark Smith - Saturday January 28

Russian Revolution colt Red Resistance left the favourite King’s Gambit without an excuse when leading every step of the way in Saturday’s Group III Fujitsu General Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.

Ridden by Brett Prebble for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott,  Red Resistance was gifted an uncontested lead. James McDonald tracked the leader on the favourite King’s Gambit, but it became apparent at the 300m he was working hard to bridge the gap.

Red Resistance kept up a relentless gallop to defeat the I Am Invincible colt King’s Gambit by one and a quarter length with a half-length back to the royally-bred Snitzel colt Shinzo a half-length back in third in an impressive debut.

Adrian Bott is confident the stable has a serious Golden Slipper contender.

uo;The exciting part is, this is the right type of colt to do it. There is so much depth to him, and he keeps improving,” Bott said.

“I still don’t think we’ve seen the bottom of him yet. He has a lot of scope to keep improving, is a lovely individual, and was very professional once again today.

“He had to step up in class once again against some well-credentialled opposition, and he responded well.

“Brett got on well with him. He certainly had some love for (owner) Sir Owen Glenn in recent weeks, so long may it continue.

“We thought we’d come here today, get him qualified, then go through the Todman, which is the traditional lead-up path, particularly for these colts.

“He is the exact type of colt who could go there and be very competitive and win a race like the Todman. Then he could go to the Slipper and be very competitive in that race.

“We have a couple of really nice two-year-olds coming through and (going) down their respective paths.

“If they are good enough and can qualify themselves through the right races. We’re in a great position. I feel we’ve got some quality types, and it will be exciting to see them put it all together.”

Withdrawn from Inglis Easter and retained to race by Go Bloodstock and Newgate, Red Resistance keeps his record perfect at two for two after winning over the same course and distance on January 14.

The son of Russian Revolution is the second foal and second winner for the top-class mare Heatherly. The daughter of Lonhro won the Group II MRC Rubiton Stakes and was twice Group I placed in the MVRC Moir Stakes and MRC Oakleigh Plate.

A $90,000 Inglis Easter yearling, Heatherly banked $655,050 for Barrie and Midge Griffiths before selling for $1,600,000 to Go Bloodstock Australia/Paul Moroney Bloodstock when consigned by Yarran Thoroughbreds to the 2018 National Broodmare Sale.

She was carrying a Written Tycoon filly named Miss Glenn, a Gosford maiden winner and placed on debut at Warwick Farm for Richard and Will Freedman.

Heatherly has a yearling colt by I Am Invincible. Tragically her Capitalist colt died after birth last September. She was covered by Snitzel on October 12.

Red Resistance is the fifth stakes-winner for Newgate Farm’s Russian Revolution, which goes from strength to strength. The son of Snitzel has another unbeaten 2yo in the Waterhouse-Bott stable in The Instructor, who won the Listed Blue Diamond Preview at Sandown on Australia Day.
