De Sonic Boom Makes Statement in Blue Diamond Preview

Mark Smith - Thursday January 26

In a race that changed dramatically in the final 100m, the Spirit Of Boom filly De Sonic Boom charged home from second last to make a winning career debut in the Group III  Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Sandown-Hillside on Australia Day.

Ridden by Blake Shinn for Anthony and Sam Freedman, De Sonic Boom scythed between runners to defeat two promising Zoustar debutants, Zousuko and Sensical.

The John McArdle-trained Zousuko was three-quarters of a length back in second, with the Peter Moody-trained Sensical a long head back in third.

“She is a filly we have a good opinion of,” Sam Freedman said.

“She had a couple of trials that we thought were just OK and were umming and ahhing whether to tip her out. We gave her one more trial, and she pulled up super.

“We thought the 1000m might be a bit sharp for her. She has a lot of scope and is very sensible.

“A big thank you to Michael Kirwan and all the owners who sent her our way.

“It’s a great result to get black-type at her first start. It’s on to the Blue Diamond now.

“We will see her again in a couple of weeks in the Blue Diamond Prelude.”

A $300,000 Inglis Premier purchase for James Bester Bloodstock from the Supreme Thoroughbreds draft, De Sonic Boom races for a consortium that includes Michel Kirwan and James Bester,  Kia Ora Stud, and carries the colours of Robert McClure.

Bred by Whitling Bloodstock, the daughter of Spirit Of Boom is a half-sister to Listed Hareeba Stakes winner Laverrod (Toronado) from the Fastnet Rock mare Demasheen, who has five winners from as many to race.

Whitling Bloodstock shelled out $120,000 for Demasheen from the Glenesk Thoroughbreds draft at the 2017 MM National Broodmare Sale.

She has a filly foal by Toronado (IRE) and visited Shamardal’s triple Group 1 winner Pinatubo (IRE) last spring.

De Sonic Boom becomes the 20th stakes-winner for Eureka Thoroughbreds top-class stallion Spirit Of Boom.
