Just A Needs Eyes Tassie Oaks after One Thousand Guineas Victory

Mark Smith - Sunday January 22

Armidale Stud’s Need Further is enjoying a day at Hobart, with Just A Needs capturing the Aviso Tasmania Insurance Thousand Guineas (1600m) after Needs Sugar saluted in the Listed Elwick Stakes.

Ridden by Brendon McCoull for Imogen Miller, Just A Needs was given the run of the race but needed the length of the straight to edge out the gallant frontrunner Piiink Beauty (Zebedee) by a long head.

The favourite Jaguar Stone (Speith) was two and a half lengths back in third.

It took six starts for Just A Needs to break her maiden. It came at her previous start with a three-length romp over 1400m on the same track.

Imogen Miller said the 3yo daughter of Needs Further would press on to the Listed Tasmanian Oaks at Launceston Racecourse on February 19.

“Brendon had her in a lovely spot. There was a fair bit of pace and she finished off strongly. It’s looking good for the 2100m (of the Tasmanian Oaks),” Miller said.

“I was edgy at the top of the straight, but when she let down, I was confident she would get there, albeit just.

We mentioned that Elwick Stakes winner Needs Sugar was out of a hard-knocking mare that started 43 times. She seems a fly-by-nighter compared to Just A Needs dam Paddy's Jubilee.

The daughter of the Sunday Silence stallion Genuine (JPN) went to the post 74 times for three wins, five seconds, and 14 thirds with earnings of $75,940.

Paddy's Jubilee has had three winners from her first three foals, and all seem to have inherited some of her toughness.

She has an unraced 2yo filly by Tooral Toff named Eastcoast Miss and a yearling colt by the same stallion.

Not covered in 2021, Paddy's Jubilee revisited Needs Further in December.
