Tasmanian Derby on Agenda for Fam Gorman

Mark Smith - Sunday January 15

Trainer Kevin Corstens has nominated the Tasmanian Derby at Hobart in February as a possible target for Fam Gorman after the consistent son of Impending broke his maiden over 1600m at Moe on Sunday.

Ridden by Ben Allen, Fam Gorman overpowered the 3yo Starcraft gelding Gronkowski by one and a quarter length, with the 4yo Dissident gelding Country's Light three-quarter length back in third.

The heavily backed Savabeel debutant Around The Buoy did well to finish fourth after bombing the start by five lengths.

“He has been trained up for 2000m, but we could not find a suitable race, so we stepped him back hoping for a kill today,” Corstens said.

“He has always been a big kid. He knows nothing and has taken a long time to develop into himself.

“I thought I had a win a couple of starts ago, but my brother Troy knocked me off with Magnaspin at Geelong. I thought it was a terrific run that day.  It has taken a bit of time, but we finally got there.

“I have aspirations for something like a Tassie Derby. If he pulls up well, he will have another start before then. It would be nice to get to a race like that.”

Bred by Australian Racehorse Breeding, Fam Gorman was a $50,000 purchase for his trainer from Cornerstone Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

The son of Impending is the second winner from as many to race from the Fastnet Rock mare Warrington, a granddaughter of Grade 1 winner, Furlough (Easy Goer), whose family has featured here several times in recent months. It reached new heights through the deeds of the unbeaten Flightline.

Warrington has had a heartbreaking run in recent years, losing foals by Sir Prancealot (IRE) and Brazen Beau and missing to Fierce Impact (JPN) last spring.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock was sold to Gavin Hurley for $12,000 at the 2022 January (Early) Online Sale.
