Juvenile Trial Watch – Hawkesbury

Tara Madgwick - Monday December 19

Three trials for juveniles at Hawkesbury on Monday produced some interesting results with the most impressive winner being the half-sister to dual Group I winner September Run.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Merchant Navy filly Steel City was having her first outing and looked a class above, scooting clear of her rivals to win by nearly four lengths in 47.47 seconds which was the quickest of the three 800m juvenile heats

A $700,000 Magic Millions purchase for Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/Best Bloodstock from the Coolmore draft, Steel City was bred by Go Bloodstock, who retain a share in her ownership along with Best Bloodstock and a big syndicate of owners.

Steel City is the most expensive yearling by Merchant Navy.

She is the third foal from Group III winning Street Boss (USA) mare Pittsburgh Flyer, whose first two foals are $2.4million earning dual Group I winner September Run and the very smart sprinting filly My Yankee Girl, who was relegated to second at Flemington last Saturday on protest.

Steel City is the most expensive yearling by Merchant Navy ever sold so carries the weight of high expectation.

Other 2YO heat winners were: Mambo Legend (Extreme Choice) and Slinky (The Autumn Sun).
