Magic 3YOs Dominate in G1 Races

Tara Madgwick - Monday December 5

The Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale may have built its reputation on being a premium source of precocious juveniles, but three year-olds bought from the 2021 sale have been racing up a storm this season and have dominated their peers in Group I races.

There have been 10 Group I winning three year-olds in Australia this season and when we take out homebreds Amelia’s Jewel and Golden Mile that leaves eight that were offered at auction and of those, five took their place in the Gold Coast sale ring.

The Magic Millions graduates cover the full distance range with Coolangatta, who won the 2022 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winning the Group I MVRC Moir Stakes (1000m) against the older sprinters, while Manzoice won the Group I VRC Victoria Derby (2500m).

Group I ATC Golden Rose (1400m) winner Jacquinot was passed in shy of his $120,000 reserve, while In Secret, winner of the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) was the most expensive of the five snapped up by Godophin for $900,000.

Striking a blow for the middle market was Madame Pommery, who won the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas (1600m) to the great delight of her all women syndicate of owners.

Interesting to note the success of Waller Racing/ Mulcaster Bloodstock in purchasing three of the Group I winning 3YO’s – Manzoice, Madame Pommery and Zougotcha.
