2017 World’s Most Expensive Yearling Wins Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Friday December 2

With less than a month of 2022 to run Dubawi has added a 44th stakes-winner for the year to his tally and it’s an interesting gelding that topped the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale when selling for 2.6million guineas to be the most expensive yearling sold in the world that year.

Now six, Prince Eiji was bought originally by Roger Varian for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum and campaigned through the early years of his career for Varian in the UK.

He won his debut at Ascot in 2018 and was Group and stakes-placed several times in subsequent years, but failed to fulfil his potential and is now racing in the UAE, still owned by the Sheikh but being trained by Doug Watson.

Prince Eiji broke the ice for his second win and first in a Black Type race when taking out the Listed Dubai Creek Mile (1m) on dirt.

Prince Eiji sold for 2.6million guineas to top the 2017 Tattersalls October Book 1 Yearling Sale.

Prince Eiji was bred by Meon Valley Stud and is the 248th stakes-winner for Dubawi.

He is a half-brother to stakes-winner Zagato and is from Group I winning Pivotal mare Izzi Top, a daughter of Group I winner Zee Zee Top, whose dam is Group I Irish Oaks winning blue hen Colorspin.

The family is stellar and a three-quarter sister to Prince Eiji, by Dubawi from Group II winner Jazzi Top sold for 1.3million guineas at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale this year to Godolphin.

Dubawi has had his fee raised for 2023 and will stand at £350,000 as befits a sire whose overall sire stats are remarkable. He has 75.4% winners to runners and 16% stakes-winners to runners.
