Juvenile Trial Watch – Canterbury

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday November 29

There were seven heats for two year-olds at the Canterbury trials on Tuesday morning and there was a whiff of Magic Millions in the air with MM eligible spring stakes-winners Empire of Japan (Breeders Plate) and Platinum Jubilee (Gimcrack Stakes) stretching their legs along with Breeders Plate runner-up Mach Ten with interesting heat winners for first season sires Trapeze Artist and Written By.

There was something interesting in every trial so let’s take a look at them all!

Dundeel colt Ritzytwenties produced a typical Waterhouse Bott trial at his second appearance, fast and professional led all the way to beat Empire of Japan, who steamed home under a hold… nothing not to like with his effort.

The winner is a half-brother to a fast juvenile stakes-winner in Rhapsody Rose and is from a half-sister to dual G1 winner Fiveanadahalfstar, who won a Victoria Debry and a BMW.

First trial for Waterhouse Bott trained Written By colt The Novelist, who showed good pace to lead and is bred for speed being from two time 1000m Snitzel winner Sunlit, a half-sister to fast G2 winning juvenile Vo Heart.

Expensive Snitzel colt Snapback has now had two trials for two wins, but Racing NSW seem to have mislaid the video for this one. The Peter and Paul Snowden trained colt is a brother to spring stakes-winner Wee Nessy and all three colts in this heat finished together and are all expensive MM horses.

The Michael Freedman trained Mach Ten is a naturally fast horse and showed that immediate brilliance again in this heat and was strong late when given a slap to keep on the job. Was the most expensive Exceed and Excel sold in 2022.

Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have a smart filly in Facile, who has had two trials now for two very easy wins and the daughter of former stable star Trapeze Artist does look one to follow and produced the quickest time for the 2YO’s here. She did it very easily and the filly chasing her home was Gimcrack winner Platinum Jubilee.

Facile is the first foal of young stakes-winning Pierro mare I Like it Easy, who comes from a noted family of female stakes-winners with Facile poised to join the honour roll.

Annabel Neasham trained Choisir filly that was second in debut in G3 Ottawa Stakes at Flemington and obviously has Magic Millions aspirations that look well founded based on this effort. Showed a neat change of gear and won with ears pricked.

From the last crop of foals by outstanding sire Choisir and is a half-sister to stakes-placed Wonderful Riri.

The Brad Widdup trained Hellbent filly Fire Lane won the Max Lees Classic on debut beating Cylinder, who was heavily backed in the Merson Cooper Stakes last Saturday and finished second. She was very professional here beating Summer Loving, who ran third in the Golden Gift and third placed Lazzago caught the eye.

Expensive Capitalist filly trained by Chris Waller, Lazzago settled last and hit the line well under a hold. She comes from a family of noted juvenile stakes-winners and looks a likely prospect to enhance the family in a similar way.
