Bull Point's Morty Claims John Letts Cup in a Thriller

Mark Smith - Saturday October 29

Kingstar Farm’s Fastnet Rock stallion Bull Point sired his second black-type winner and first in Australia when his first crop son Morty won a tough battle with The Map in the Listed John Letts Cup (1800m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Ridden by Jake Toeroek for trainer Shayne Cahill, Morty defeated The Map (Alpine Eagle) by a short-half-head with Perfect Route (Good journey) three-quarters of a length back in third.

Morty is owned by Cahill’s wife, Chelsea, who said she was a reluctant owner.

“It’s overwhelming. He is our horse, God love him,” Chelsea Cahill said.

“We bought him as a yearling with the intention to sell him overseas. That didn’t pan out as he injured himself.

“We put him in the paddock for six months. We wee told he would never race, and now look where he is.”

Morty advances his record to six wins, two seconds, and six thirds with earnings of $231,220.

A $10,000 purchase for Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) from the Barador Stud draft at the 2018 National Weanling Sale, Morty failed to make his $20,000 reserve when offered by Princess Park at the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Morty failed to make his $20,000 reserve as a yearling

He is the best of five winners from ten to race out of the unraced Fuji Kiseki (JPN) mare Draguetta. Morty is her final foal.

Morty follows the Listed Macau Guineas winner Bygone Era for Bull Point who is also the sire of Encountabull who was runner-up in the $500,000 (RL) Inglis Nursery at Randwick won by Group 1 MVRC AJ Moir Stakes winner Wild Ruler.

Bull Point stands at Kingstar Farm at a fee of $6,600.
