Another Valuable Prize for Golden Mile

Mark Smith - Saturday October 22

Caulfield Guineas hero Golden Mile backed up to win the $1,000,000 Group II TAB Callander-Presnell (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman for James Cummings, the son of Astern defied the stubborn Russian Revolution gelding Communist by a long-head in a driving finish.  The Sebring filly A Lot More Love was two and a quarter lengths back in third.

A Godolphin homebred, Golden Mile advances his record to four wins and a second from six starts with earnings of $2,597,500.

“I left it open for Hughie to back his judgement with the horse and have confidence in the horse, the horse has got a great turn of foot,” stable representative Darren Beadman said.

“He is a very fit, seasoned horse and he has come out of that Caulfield Guineas win in superb order.

“His class got him home today again. He has really got that fighting spirit to win when he was just able to work into the race nicely. He is a quality colt and certainly going places.

“He is out of a very fast mare, Calaverite, there is a lot of speed on the dam’s side.

“Astern, he won a Golden Rose but you’d swear blind you were saddling up Astern in the stalls. He’s got his dad’s head all over, a lovely temperament and he’s a quality colt.”

Golden Mile is the best of three winners from four to race from the stakes-winning Lonhro mare Calaverite, a half-sister to Group winners Gold Fever and Gold Rush.

Calaverite has a two year-old colt by Exceed and Excel called Stanislaus who made his career debut with a sixth behind stablemate Barber in the Kirkham Plate earlier in the day.

Calaverite has a yearling colt by Microphone and is in foal to Street Boss (USA).
