Zoustar Filly Wins G1 Cheveley Park

Tara Madgwick - Saturday September 24

As predicted, it’s been a big weekend for Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar with Zoustyle placing in the G1 Moir Stakes, Zou Tiger third in the G1 Golden Rose and then the icing on the cake in the UK with his star Northern Hemisphere bred filly Lezoo taking out the Group I Cheveley Park Stakes (6f) at Newmarket.

Trained by Ralph Beckett and ridden by William Buick, Lezoo proved too good for a high class field defeating the favourite Meditate by three-quarters of a length taking other overall record to four wins and a second from five starts.

“Lezoo went slightly off after the Princess Margaret. She had four quick runs in succession and it just caught up with her,” revealed Ralph Beckett.

“I wasn't sure that she was back on her game but she did one easy piece of work last week and that worked well. She's just very, very good. We haven't had one as good as this at this stage. She just doesn't show up at home really.

“She caught me out first time, I told our owners that she'd win a novice and that would be about it. It shows how wrong you can be! She just got better and better with racing.”

Bred by Chasemore Farm, Lezoo made 77,000 guineas at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year and then was re-sold at the Arqana Breeze Up Sale this year fetching 110,000 euros when bought by Atlas Bloodstock.

She is the fourth winner from good producer Roger Sez, a Group III winner by Red Ransom stallion Red Clubs. The yearling half-sister by Territories to Lezoo will be offered at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 as Lot 169 by Highclere Stud.

Lezoo is the fourth Group I winner for Zoustar joining Sunlight, Zoutori and Mizzy.

Zoustar now has G1 winners in both hemispheres.

The champion son of Northern Meteor has sired 11 winners in Europe and stands this spring at a fee of $198,000 and shuttles from Widden Stud to Tweenhills Stud in the UK.
