The week that was – Tom Walter’s ones to follow

Tom Walter - Tuesday October 3

A trio of four-year-old mares are among the horses to follow from the previous week’s racing in New South Wales.

SAMANTHA – Warwick Farm 02/10/17
Think this girl did enough in her first-run back from a spell over a 1000m dash. She was only beaten 2-1/4 lengths by Kaepernick – a horse that is Group class on his day – in sizzling time. Considering she was first-up since April and coming off three consecutive runs on heavy tracks, her effort was admirable on the good (3) surface. Form indicates she will be more effective up to 1100m and 1200m. Went from a maiden to a Listed win in four runs last campaign so has obvious ability.
Career record (8:3-1-0).

GOOD TIME CHARLIE – Warwick Farm 02/10/17
Resumed from a spell over 1000m and bumped into the hard-fit (and flying) Latin Boy, going down by a length. Finished off resolutely under a decent weight of 60.5kg and looks capable of making some big inroads this preparation based on how his previous form has stacked up. Has finished around the likes of Tactical Advantage, Arbeitsam, Memes, and Test The World which bodes well for his future. Is a winner second-up and should be suited stepping up to 1100m next time out.
Career record (12:2-4-1).

LIGHTNING NIC – Kembla Grange 30/09/17
Took until her sixth start to break through but boy was this win impressive. Not much went right early in her career and was off the scene for nine months prior to resuming in a Goulburn 1300m maiden on September 1. She was beaten that day but likely needed the hit-out first-up over that distance before a pass mark second-up when caught back on the inside section of the Newcastle home straight. Stepped up to 1500m here and simply blitzed them, zooming down the outside in a race where they recorded the last 600m in a sharp 33.68. Without having the actual sectionals, you can be confident this mare broke 33 seconds for her last 600m to come from 10th at the 400m and win by 1-3/4 lengths. Watch this space.
Career record (6:1-0-1).

BAYSA – Rosehill 27/09/17
On a day where the rail was out and most runners were struggling to make up ground down the outside, this mare stood out. Made her run down the extreme outside first-up over 1500m but finished off resolutely to just miss in a photo. At the end of her last preparation, this daughter of Mastercraftsman was only beaten 2-1/2 lengths behind Egg Tart in the Group I Queensland Oaks (2200m). Might be a risk second-up after such a big run first-up but keep an eye on her once she gets out to 2000m and beyond.
Career record (6:1-0-1).
