One to Watch – Pakenham

Tara Madgwick - Thursday September 22

Expensive Redoute’s Choice filly Miss Passion was expected to break her maiden at Pakenham on Thursday, but she was mowed down late by an eye-catching I Am Invincible colt on debut.

The Peter Moody trained Miss Passion was a short priced favourite for the 1100m maiden after finishing second at her first two starts, but she remained a bridesmaid with the Phillip Stokes trained colt General Barca charging to the line under Daniel Moore to score a half length win.

uo;We’re trying to keep him as a colt. We live the dream, he stays intact,” said Phillip Stokes.

“I knew what he was capable of and he didn’t let us down. We can aim high at races like the Coolmore but we’ll see how he goes. That’s the dream.”

Daniel Moore was relieved to get the win.

“He’s a boy. He knows that, and can be a little tricky at times. It didn’t go to plan today and they don’t generally win from that spot,” he said.

General Barca is a homebred for Hilldene Farm and is a full brother to stakes-winner Supreme Idea. He is the fourth winner from four foals to race from Sweet Sister, an unraced sister to Group I winner Sweet Idea, who was purchased by the Queen and has started her stud career in the UK at the Royal Stud.

Sweet Sister was bought by Hilldene Farm for $550,000 at the 2017 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale and on-sold at the same sale in 2021 for $750,000 to Kia Ora Stud. Her two year-old colt by Zoustar was bought for $520,000 at Inglis Easter by Matt Laurie Racing / ARJB Racing and she was covered by Justify (USA) last spring. Sweet Sister also has a yearling colt by Dundeel.
