One to Watch - Hawkesbury

Tara Madgwick - Thursday September 22

Relocated from Widden Stud to Gooree Park where he was bred this spring, Your Song had a stylish maiden winner at Hawkesbury on Thursday, who was his most expensive yearling sold in 2021.

The John O’Shea  trained King of Naples impressed at the trials ahead of his debut run back in March  when he started favourite, but failed to handle the heavy 9 track finishing sixth at Warwick Farm behind subsequent Group II winning filly North Star Lass with Golden Rose contender Basquait running second.

He disappointed again at his next run on another bottomless track before being spelled and gelded.

King of Naples got under the guard of punters on Thursday starting at $8, but confirmed the potential he had shown much earlier when winning the 1000m maiden by a length on a soft 7.

A $170,000 Inglis Classic purchase for his trainer from the Gooree Park draft, King of Naples is the third winner from three to race out of stakes-placed Ocean Tempest, a half-sister by Bel Esprit to stakes-winner Ruling Dynasty.

King of Naples was the most expensive yearling by Your Song in 2021.

King of Naples comes from the best family in the Australian Studbook claiming Dancing Show (USA) as his third dam with his stakes-placed grand-dam Makarova being a half-sister to Group I winners Umatilla, Hurricane Sky and to the dam of Redoute’s Choice.

Gooree Park bought Makarova at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 1999 when the daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch (USA) topped the sale at $1.2million.

I think we can expect to see more from King of Naples if we ever get him on a dry track!

A Group I winning son of Fastnet Rock, Your Song stands at Gooree Park at a fee of $5,500.
