Redoute's Choice Colt Makalu Breaks Maiden

Mark Smith - Friday September 16

The Annabel Neasham-trained Makalu became the second 3yo winner from the last crop of Redoute's Choice in the space of three days when leading at every call in a 1400m maiden on Newcastle Cup day.

Ridden by Chad Schofield, Makalu jumped a length in front and was untroubled to defeat the Almanzor (FR) colt Summons by three-quarter of a length with the So You Think colt Cut On A Dime a short head back in third.

It was Makalu's third start, and all have been on the Broadmeadow track.

The striking son of Redoute's Choice was a $750,000 purchase for Tony Fung Investments/Phoenix Thoroughbreds from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

He was the third most expensive Redoute's Choice yearling from the 19 offered in 2021.

The Chris Waller-trained Rediener became the first 3yo winner from the final crop of 23 live foals when he opened his account at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Makalu a $750,000 Magic Millions yearling

Makalu is the third winner from four foals of the stakes-placed Northern Meteor mare Mount Zero, who Peter Collier purchased for $240,000 at the Teeley Asset Dispersal.

That has proved a fantastic investment, with her yearlings selling for $480,000, $650,000, $750,000, and $550,000 for a colt by The Autumn Sun, named General Sensei, knocked down to The Hermitage/Chris Waller Racing at the Gold Coast in January.

A daughter of the stakes-winner Beauty School (Royal Academy) from the family of Golden Slipper winner Farnan, Mount Zero was covered by Snitzel last spring.
