Impending's Son Scorch Makes Winning Debut

Mark Smith - Wednesday August 24

Remarkable broodmare Hell It's Hot is the gift that keeps on giving for breeder Fred Moses.

The latest winner for the 20yo daughter of Zeditave came on the Kensington track at Randwick on Wednesday when the 3yo Impending gelding Scorch made a winning career debut over 1100m.

The race boasted some big pedigrees and expensive yearlings, with eight starters holding nominations to either the Caulfield Guineas or 1000 Guineas.

Ridden by Willie Pike for Michael, Wayne, and John Hawkes, the handsome chestnut held Godolphin's fast-finishing Shooting To Win colt Silvanito by a half head with a further length and a half back to the Pride Of Dubai debutante Alamira in third.

"He has always shown really nice ability. We gelded him early and made him a racehorse," Michael Hawkes said.

"He had to do it the hard way. He was left vulnerable, and when that horse came up on his inside, he found, and he has a promising future.

"He has a pedigree, and we never shy away from buying nice athletic types, and that is what he is.

'The best part about this bloke is the older he gets, the better he will be.

"He has done everything right to date, but he is still a baby. He has a lot of upside and will mature physically and mentally."

Hell It's Hot had eight yearlings sell at the Inglis Classic and one at Scone before Scorch made the big time when consigned by Corumbene Stud to the 2021 Inglis Easter Australian Yearling Sale.

Scorch a $240,000 Inglis Easter yearling

Hawkes Racing had the final say at $240,000, which resulted in Scorch being the second highest priced yearling from the first crop of Darley Stud's dual Group 1 winner Impending (Lonhro).

No guessing is needed why the son of Impending was upgraded to the big sale. His half-sister In Her Time (Time Thief) had victories in the Group 1 ATC The Galaxy and Group 1 VRC Lightning Stakes and placed a further six times at the highest level while banking $3,772,725.

In Her Time was a $2,000,000 purchase for Newgate Farm at the 2020, Inglis Chairmans Sale. Put in foal to I Am Invincible, In Her Time went through the same ring twelve months later with Yulong Stud taking her home for $2,200,000.

A half-sister to the stakes-winners Hot As Hell (County), Flaming Hot (County) and Craig's Dragon (Catbird), Hell It's Hot has enjoyed a significant upgrade through her half-sister's Sin Sin Sin and Harlem Heat.

Sin Sin Sin is the dam of Coolmore Stud's The Everest and Group II Todman Stakes winner Yes Yes Yes, while Harlem Heat is the dam of dual Listed winner Harlem River.

The final chapter for Hell It's Hot is yet to be written.

Bahen Bloodstock Ltd / Lees Racing shelled out $280,000 for Hell It's Hot's Pariah filly consigned by Toolooganvale Farm to the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Named Feronia, she is in training with Kris Lees.

Hell It's Hot has a yearling filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) and is back in foal to the triple Group 1 winning son of Dubawi.
