Pedigree Watch – UK – Sprinters, Stayers and a Star 2YO

Tara Madgwick - Friday August 19

The Group I Nunthorpe Stakes (5f) was the highlight at York overnight with two year-old filly The Platinum Queen running bravely for second in the all aged sprint but not quite good enough for Highfield Princess, while Godolphin produced another star 2YO colt.

The John Quinn trained daughter of Night of Thunder was a last start Group I winner in France following on from winning the Group II Duke of York Stakes in May and finishing sixth in the Group I Platinum Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

She showed her class cruising clear to win by two and a half lengths and has won 11 of 29 starts with more G1 goals to come this year.

“Highfield Princess is a wonderful mare. She didn't run at two, and has taken a while to learn her trade. She's the most extraordinary horse I've ever trained, and I'll put her in the Foret and Abbaye now before running her in the Breeders' Cup,” said John Quinn.

Highfield Princess is a homebred for John Fairley and is a half-sister to Group II winner Cardsharp from winning Danehill mare Pure Illusion, a daughter of Group III winner Saintly Speech.

She is one of 11 stakes-winners worldwide this year for Dubawi’s Group I winning son Night of Thunder, who stands at a fee of €75,000 at Darley’s Kildangan Stud.

The Group II Gimcrack Stakes (6f) was won by the Charlie Appleby trained Kingman colt Noble Style, who made it three wins in as many starts with a stylish victory over Harry Angel colt Marshman.

A 525,000 guinea purchase for Godolphin from Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book One, Noble Style is the first winner from stakes-winning Pivotal mare Eartha Kitt, a half-sister to stakes-winner Arthur Kitt from Group II winner Ceiling Kitty.

Entered for upcoming Group I races, Noble Style is the 48th stakes-winner for Kingman and is the third for his sire bred from a daughter of Pivotal. The nick has produced 10 winners from 15 runners and is 20% SW to runner.

The Group II Lonsdale Cup (2m ½ f) was won in a procession by Nathaniel stayer Quickthorn following the scratching of race favourites Trueshan and Stradivarius.

Trained by Hughie Morrison and ridden by Tommy Marquand, he won by 14 lengths! It was his seventh win from 16 starts and he’s now won his past three in a row, all stakes races.

Quickthorn is the best of five winners from Daffydowndilly, a winning Oasis Dream daughter of stakes-winner Art Eyes.
