Guineas Contenders – Who’s in the Mix

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s prestigious Group I three-year-old classics at Caulfield, the Group I MRC Neds Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the Group I Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) have attracted record entries.

With prizemoney increased to a record $3 million for the Caulfield Guineas on 9 October, the number of entries has soared from 278 last year to 324 in 2022.

The only Group I winning colt last season, Blue Diamond winner Daumier headlines the entries and is joined by Group I placed juveniles Best Of Bordeaux and Political Debate, highly rated Kiwi entry Sharp ‘N’ Smart and quality Snitzel colts Williamsburg and Burgunder.

Also noted promising sons of Maurice (Jpn) in Kibou and Foujita San and Churchill (IRE) colt Conqueror.

The $1 million Thousand Guineas, to be run on Wednesday, 12 October, has attracted 241 entries including the standout performers of the Australian two-year-old season in Group I winners Fireburn (Golden Slipper, Sires Produce), She’s Extreme (Champagne Stakes) and Sheeza Belter (JJ Atkins).

The latter two fillies are already Group I winners at the mile.

Blue Diamond runner-up Revolutionary Miss, Magic Millions winner Coolangatta, Group II Percy Sykes Stakes winner Paris Dior, Godolphin’s unbeaten filly In Secret, and the highly touted Satono Aladdin (Jpn) filly Koshu are also in the mix.
