Supido Fires into New Season – Debut Winners Double

A bargain priced option on the Widden Stud NSW roster, promising young Sebring stallion Supido put his name in lights on Wednesday with two exciting debut three year-old winners with spring aspirations.

Supido featured first at Canterbury on Wednesday when talented colt Buenos Noches made a winning debut for the Matthew Smith stable.

Well educated with four trials under his belt, the most recent on July 15, Buenos Noches was ridden by Josh Parr and produced a strong finish to win the 1100m maiden in style.

Entered for the Group I MRC Caulfield Guineas, Buenos Noches made his last furlong his best as he hit top gear and cruised clear by nearly two lengths over blueblood Snitzel filly Beautiful Heart, the half-sister to dual Group I winner Hungry Heart.

Josh Parr was impressed with the colt who is the second winner from unraced Northern Meteor mare Koi, a grand-daughter of triple Group I winning Champion NZ 2YO Filly Ballroom Babe.

“He’s an imposing style of horse, nice to look at and nice to ride,” Parr said.

“I’m full of praise for the horse today.”

At Geelong, the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr stable produced another impressive debut winner by Supido in three year-old colt What You Need.

Sent out a hot favourite for the 1118m maiden with Ben Melham on board, What You Need gave his jockey a sit and steer job as he powered away from his rivals to win by four lengths held together.

What You Need is entered for all the big spring 3YO races including the Caulfield Guineas.

“The manner in which he won suggests he’s got a good black-type future in front of him,” Mick Price said

“We’ve had some nice horses and he’s one of them, the Spring is in front of us, he might be in the paddock in three or four days’ time or he might plot a course into the better races.

“He’s a Caulfield Guineas nom, he’s nommed for them all but the main thing with these young horses is if they pull up good, their joints are good, they train on, otherwise they go to the paddock to spell.”

What You Need was a $180,000 Magic Millions purchase from Widden Stud.

He is a half-brother to Group III winner Runway Star and is the third winner from stakes-placed Commands mare Intuit, a daughter of Group I winner Wrap Around and half-sister to the dam of Champion 2YO Filly Fashions Afield.
