The Road to the 2023 Golden Slipper Starts Here

The release of nominations for the 2023 Golden Slipper marks the beginning of a long road that will end at Rosehill next year on March 18, so let’s take a closer look at those 2000 plus  babies in the hunt for the world’s richest for 2YO’s.

Champion sire elect I Am Invincible has the most entries of all stallions with 96 to his credit followed by Zoustar with 92, Deep Field with 85, Capitalist with 79, Snitzel with 77 and Russian Revolution with 73.

Champion sire I Am Invincible has more Slipper entries than any other sire.

I Am Invincible had another stellar year at the sales in 2022 and his most expensive filly and colt are among his entries.

Chris Waller Racing have entered the $2million half-sister to Classique Legend from Pinocchio, while Coolmore Australia have entered the $1.9million half-brother to Group II winner Dubious from Suspicieuse (Fr).

Sires with Golden Slipper Entries (20 or more)

First season sires are prominent on the list with Trapeze Artist having the most entries with 67 followed by The Autumn Sun with 65, Written By with 41, Harry Angel (IRE) with 39 and Justify (USA) with 38.

The 2022 Golden Slipper was won by outstanding filly Fireburn, whose sire Rebel Dane had only three Slipper entries last year and he has just one this year, a filly from Miss Von Costa.

One the score of price, 38 yearlings sold for $1million or more have been nominated including the highest priced yearling sold in Australia this year, the Widden Stud consigned Zoustar colt from Solar Charged.

The full brother to Champion Filly Sunlight sold for $3million at Inglis Easter to Tom Magnier and has been nominated by Coolmore Australia as was the second highest priced Slipper entry, the full brother to Golden Slipper winner Estijaab that sold for $2.25 million.

The nominators list is headed by Ciaron Maher Racing with their 150 entries quite a number above Waterhouse Bott Racing with 117 and Annabel Neasham with 114.

Godolphin invariably have a runner on the day and have 104 entries with the majority by their own sires although they do have a smattering of homebred entries by champion sires Snitzel (4), I Am Invincible (3), Fastnet Rock (5) and Zoustar (2).

Lonhro leads the way with 15 Godolphin entries followed by Exceed and Excel with 14, Epaulette, who gave them this year’s Blue Diamond winner Daumier with 8, first season sire Harry Angel (IRE) with eight and their former sire Sidestep also with eight including the full brother to his Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi, who has been named Highlands.
