New Additions and Open Day for Mapperley Stud

Media Release - Tuesday July 5

Mapperley Stud will welcome the addition of three new stallions to their roster this upcoming breeding season, with former Valachi Downs residents Vespa and Savile Row joining the Matamata farm’s earlier acquisition of Armory.

Vespa will stand at Mapperley Stud.

Vespa, a winner of seven races including the Gr.1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Karaka Million 2YO (1200m), has added a further three stakes winners to his name in the last 12 months, most recently with Carolina Reaper taking out the Gr.3 Easter Handicap (1600m).

Savile Row, the only son of Makfi standing at stud in New Zealand, has shown good early potential. His eldest are now just rising three and his stud career started in style when his first race-day runner Perfectly Suited won by six lengths.

Savile Row, also Valachi-bred, himself won three races over 1200m, including the Listed Hallmark Stud Handicap (1200m), and was a three-time Group One runner-up, proving his versatility in distance.

“Margaux and myself were happy to be able to support the Hickmans’ on-going ownership interests in the stallions given their long-term relationship and the recent changes at Valachi,” Mapperley Stud principal Simms Davidson said.

“It was also a good fit for us given the facilities we have for our own stallions and capacity to agist client mares.”

The service fees for both stallions are unchanged from last season with Vespa remaining at $5,000 + GST and Savile Row at $2,500 + GST.  For all booking enquiries please contact Simms Davison +64 21607853 or Steven Scaglia +64 274950082.

Mapperley Stud Open Day

Mapperley Stud, in conjunction with Windsor Park Stud, are holding an open day this Friday at 2.30pm for the public to view their exciting new stallion Armory.

Armory (IRE) will be on show.

A precocious two-year-old, Armory won three of his first four starts including the Gr.2 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and Gr.3 Tyros Stakes (1400m).

He was then tested at the highest level in the Gr.1 National Stakes (1400m) where he finished second to Champion Two Year-Old Pinatubo who stands his first season at Darley, Kelvinside for A$55,000.

Armory’s seven start two-year-old season concluded with placings in both the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (1600m) and Gr.1 Criterium International Stakes (1400m) in France.

Crowned Champion Three-Year-Old in Ireland and Joint Champion Three-Year-Old in Europe, trainer Aidan O’Brien travelled Armory to Australia to contest the Gr.1 W.S Cox Plate (2040m).

In a thrilling edition of the weight-for-age classic Armory finished runner-up to Sir Dragonet, beating Group One winners Russian Camelot, Arcadia Queen, Fierce Impact, Probabeel, Kolding as well as All Star Mile victor Mugatoo.

Returning to England he won the Gr.2 Huxley Stakes (2100m) in his first up appearance as a four-year-old before running third in the Gr.1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Armory achieved a Timeform rating of 122 as both a three-year-old and a four-year-old, further demonstrating his quality. Attending the event will give you the opportunity to participate in the kick a goal competition being held directly after the stallion parade.

The prize is a half-price service fee to Armory and the two studs have generously offered to donate the fee to a selected charity.

Mapperley Stud will also parade their other stallions Contributer, Complacent and Puccini at the open day.

Armory will stand for an introductory service fee of $10,000+GST.
