Exciting Thronum 2YO Wins Two in a Row

Tara Madgwick - Saturday July 2

Widden Stud’s promising young Snitzel stallion Thronum has a very smart 2YO in the shape of Thron Bone, who scored a brave victory in the$150,000 VRC Yulong Next Gen Sprinters Final (1200m) for juveniles at Flemington on Saturday.

Ridden by Will Price for Jerome Hunter, Thron Bone was in front a long way from home and repelled all challengers to win by the best part of a length, proving win last Saturday over highly rated filly Ghaanati was no fluke.

"For this horse to back up like that, it's great credit to the staff and also Graeme Gathercole (owner), he lets me choose where I want to have the horses. He said it was up to me whether I backed him up, if I thought he was ready to go and I appreciate that too," Jerome Hunter said.

Winning jockey Will Price has been aboard Thron Bone for both of his wins and believes the colt has a bright future.

"It was all foreign to him, down the straight today. I was pretty taken by his win last start, for him to come here today and back it up a week later, Jerome's done a terrific job just keeping him happy. He looked great and he's very professional," Price said.

"I think the world's his oyster at the moment… I think he'll go through his grades nicely and find a pretty nice mark."

A $200,000 purchase for Rich River Meat Exports Pty Ltd from the Sun Stud draft at the Inglis Melbourne Premer Yearling Sale, Thron Bone carries the colours of Graeme Gathercole’s Graebar Park.

He is the most expensive yearling by Thronum sold at public auction and has already won two of four starts earning just shy of $200,000.

Thron Bone is the second foal and first winner for Thorsborne a 4-time winning daughter of Hinchinbrook. Purchased by Andrew Williams bloodstock for $50,000 at the 2017 Inglis Chairmans Sale, Thorsborne is a sister to Group II ATC Skyline Stakes winner Diamond Tathagata and a half-sister to dual Listed winner Ancestry.

Graeme Gathercole purchased Thorsborne’s weanling Fiorente filly for $8,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale.

Thorsborne was covered by Trapeze Artist last spring.

The winner of the Group II MVRC Australia Stakes, Thronum stands in Victoria at a fee of $7,700.
