Corfe Castle Makes it 18 for Better Than Ready

Mark Smith - Wednesday June 15

Lyndhurst Stud Farm's Better Than Ready countered the challenge of Spirit of Boom in the race for individual 2yo winners when the Trent and Toby Edmonds trained Corfe Castle opened his winning account in the Whisper Paper Maiden Plate (1100m) for colts and gelding at Doomben on Wednesday.

Spirit Of Milan captured the fillies division to draw Spirit Of Boom to within one of Better Than Ready.

Corfe Castle made his second start after debuting with a second to Johnny Rocker on the synthetic at the Sunshine Coast on May 27.

That son of Jukebox made the form look good when winning the Listed Oxlade Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

With Robbie Fradd in the saddle, Corfe Castle defeated the fast-finishing Winning Rupert gelding Billionair Baby by a length with the Better Than Ready colt Dealing's Done a long-neck back in third.

"He's a precocious little fellow," Toby Edmonds said.

"He is out of a Rock Of Gibraltar mare that got out to 1800m which is a bit unusual, but I suppose Better Than Ready put a bit of speed in his legs.

"He has a future, although he is still a bit raw. He did a bit wrong in the home straight but gave a good kick.

"This might turn out a good (form) race. There were some very nice pedigrees there.

"We bred this one for not very much. It's one of the few I have not had to pay a lot of money for.

Bred and owned in partnership by Toby Edmonds,  Corfe Castle was consigned by Alexia Fraser Bloodstock to the 2021 Gold Coast National Yearling Sale, where he failed to make his $40,000 reserve.

Better Than Ready leads the way with 18 2yo winners for the season

He is the first winner for Quick Witted, who won three races for Edmonds. Her dam Haywire (Marauding) is a sister to Oakleigh Plate winner Drum and Tambour (dam of 4-time Group 1 winner Grand Armee) and three-quarter sister to the Hong Kong champion Genius and Evil.

From one of Newhaven Park Stud's revered families, Haywire is a half-sister to the Group 1 South Australian Oaks winner Anamato (dam of Godolphin's outstanding Anamoe); stakes-winner and Group 1 Caulfield Guineas runner-up Port Watch; Volte (dam of Rosehill Guineas winner Dealer Principal); and Volted in (dam of Group 1 ARC Diamond Stakes winner Yourdeel).

Quick Witted has a yearling colt by Rothesay and a weanling colt by Love Conquers All.

She was covered by Love Conquers All again last spring.
