Vale, Burst

Media Release - Monday June 6

It is with great sorrow that Newhaven Park announce the passing of our champion race mare Burst (Marauding x Sudden).

Burst passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, at Newhaven Park aged 32.

Bust has been laid to rest at her birthplace Newhaven Park.

We would like to thank everyone who was involved with Burst, the only filly to ever complete the 2YO Triple Crown.

Her trainer, the legendary Clarry Conners, and his team at Victory Lodge, regular jockey Shane Dye, and all members of our team here at Newhaven Park. We would especially like to thank Vanessa Heep, who attended to her every need since her return to Newhaven Park

Burst was a champion 2YO filly, running 2nd in the G3 Gimcrack on debut, before winning 5 races in a row: the Listed Slipper at Gosford, the G2 Reisling, the G1 Golden Slipper, the G1 Sires Produce and the G1 Champagne Stakes.

At three she won the G2 Tea Rose, and was placed in the G1 Flight Stakes, G1 Thousand Guineas, G1 VRC Oaks, and the G3 Tea Rose Stakes. She was later placed in the G1 Chipping Norton and G1 VRC Oaks. Burst retired having won 7 races from 40 starts and placed a further 11 times.

Burst was sold in 1996 for a record price of $900,000, in foal to Danehill and produced 11 foals.

In 2018, with the help of Alastair Pulford at Darley, John Kelly’s wife Sarah located Burst and organised her return to Newhaven Park, thanks to the kindness and generosity of her owner at the time. Since 2018 Burst has lived at Newhaven, and having her back at Newhaven has been incredibly special.

Burst epitomised the values of Newhaven, and was beloved by our whole team. We are thankful for everyone who has worked with her and helped her to live such a long and healthy life.
