Juvenile Trial Watch – Rosehill

Tara Madgwick - Friday May 20

A busy set of trials on the grass at Rosehill on Friday morning included eight 2YO heat winners including two expensive unraced colts by champion sire Written Tycoon.

Pyrois was the most expensive Written Tycoon sold in 2021.

Pyrois was the most expensive yearling sold in 2021 by Written Tycoon. He was bred and sold by Emirates Park at the Magic Millions for $1.2million to Spendthrift Australia and is a half-brother to three minor winners from Taqaseem, a placed half-sister by Medaglia D’Oro (USA) to Group I winner Sense of Occasion from the Asawir branch of the famed Easy Date family.

Trained by Team Hawkes, Pyrois won his first two barrier trials back in January in the Spendthrift colours, but has had a change of ownership during his spell and was sporting the Hesket Thoroughbreds colours on Friday.

Now running for a partnership that includes Hesket, My Racehorse, Emirates and  R & C Legh Racing Pty Ltd, Pyrois jumped from an outside gate and travelled deep all the way surging to the line to win by half a length.

Winning the previous heat and running nearly a second quicker was the Chris Waller trained Written Tycoon colt Operative, a $900,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Arrowfield draft for Tom Magnier.

It was the second trial for Operative, who was given a very quiet time at his previous outing, but this time was asked to do a lot more and relished the task, powering clear to win by more than three lengths.

Operative is the second foal of Secret Doubt, a metro winning three-quarter sister to stakes-winner Detective from Group I winner Covertly.

Other 2YO heat winners were: Good Girl (Star Turn), Cappelletti (Capitalist), Ballon Bleu (Written Tycoon), Shenthara (Not a Single Doubt), Wingardium (Vancouver) and Sightseer (I Am Invincible).
