The Kris Lees-trained Velvet Haze made the best possible start to her career when overcoming interference to charge home under Dylan Gibbons.

Carrying the colours of Australian Bloodstock, the daughter of Spieth defeated the Mikki Isle (JPN) gelding De Lovely Lad by a length and a half with the 5yo Uncle Mo (USA) mare Limpida a half neck back in third.

Bred by Aquis Farm, Velvet Haze was an $87,500 purchase by Australian Bloodstock from the Waylon J Stud draft at the 2021 MM Gold Coast National Yearling Sale.

The daughter of Spieth is a half-sister to Ashema, a daughter of I Am Invincible, who debuted with a second to Acrobat in the $500,000 Inglis Nursery in 2020.

A winner at Randwick and placed in the Group III ATC Kindergarten Stakes and Listed BRC Dalrello Stakes, Ashema will be highly sought after when offered by Blue Sky Premium Consignment at the fillies and mares session of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale (lot 582).

Velvet Haze and Ashema are daughters of the stakes-placed Exceed and Excel mare Omniscient whose stakes-winning dam Omens (Octagonal) is a three-quarter sister to Group III winner Skytrain and a half-sister to Listed winner Accept and to the dam of Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Erewhon.

Omniscient has a yearling filly by Santos and was covered by Pierro last spring.

Velvet Haze is the fourth first crop winner from 12 starters for Spieth, which stands at Aquis Farm in 2022 for a fee of $8,800.
