Rubick's Lincoln Square Impresses on Debut at Caulfield

Mark Smith - Saturday May 7

The Rubick colt Lincoln Square looks to have a bright future following a faultless display on debut over 1200m at Caulfield on Saturday.

Ridden by Jye McNeill for Greg Eurell, Lincoln Square led at every call to defeat last-start Caulfield winner Liberty Steps (Sidestep) by two lengths, with Merchant Prince (Written Tycoon) a further half-length back in third.

Greg Eurell said he holds the son of Rubick in high regard.

“He’s a very nice horse, and it’s a very pleasing result,” he said.

“It was a challenging situation. He was gelded last spring, and everything went fine, but four days later, a hemorrhage ruptured.

“He was in a very bad way. It was 50-50 whether he’d survive or not.

“He took a bit to recover, but he kept making good progress week by week and was really starting to improve.

“We would’ve liked to have had him in earlier, but that came out of left field.

“I think he’s done an enormous job today. Getting that win under his belt gives us a good opportunity to plan ahead.”

“The horse travels lovely. Even though he was forward, he wasn’t chewing at the bridle. Once he learns a little more about the caper, I think he can get out to 1600m.”

McNeil said Lincoln Square was a true professional.

“He had a great attitude and did everything 100% correct,” McNeil said.

“He felt as though he had gears to go through in the straight. He was only cruising, so his future looks bright.”

Lincoln Square is the second winner from as many to race from the talented Haradasun mare Redasun who carried the same colours as her daughter to three wins at Sandown.

A half-sister to listed Grafton Cup winner Rednav, Redasun has a yearling colt by Stratum Star and a weanling colt by Adelaide (IRE). She was not covered last spring.
