Mr Mozart Keeps the Ball Rolling for Snitzel

Mark Smith - Saturday April 30

Snitzel may be running out of time to mount a serious challenge to So You Think and I Am Invincible for the sires title, but the champion son of Redoute’s Choice is enjoying another remarkable season.

The Arrowfield stallion had a memorable day at Hawkesbury on Saturday with the promising two-year-olds Burgunder and Basquiat running 1-2 in the opener.

On the other end of the scale, Exotic Ruby earned her first stakes win at the age of six in the Group III Hawkesbury Crown to become Snitzel’s 121st stakes-winner.

In between Mr Mozart kept on his winning way in the $2000,000 Group III Hawkesbury Guineas.

The Michael, Wayne, and John Hawkes-trained 3yo has kept himself in the best of company since his seasonal debut when fifth in the Group III Vain Stakes at Flemington on August 14.

His Hawkesbury Guineas triumph followed success in the Group II Phar Lap Stakes and Group III Doncaster Prelude.

With Willie Pike in the saddle, Mr Mozart looked likely to fall prey to the outsider of the field, Dalchini who was in receipt of 5ks.

Mr Mozart lifted to repel the challenge of Dalchini (Flying Artie) by a half neck with Party For One (Rubick) a length and three-quarters back in third.

A beneficiary of the big wet in Sydney and surrounds, Mr Mozart advances his record to five wins and a second from 12 starts with earnings of  $531,900.

“I was tardy away but I had him ready for quite a while and he lost concentration for a split second,” Pike said.

“Once he found the front and relaxed I knew I was still OK.

“He has done a lot of work in all his starts that I have ridden him so I thought I better not change the pattern.”

A homebred for the group that raced his dam, Mr Mozart is the first foal of Euro Angel.

A daughter of Rip Van Winkle, Euro Angel was trained by Team Hawkes to win the Group III MRC Ladies Day Vase and split In Her Time and Daysee Doom in the Group II Millie Fox Stakes at Rosehill.

Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Euro Angel was the third yearling purchase by Team Hawkes out of the imported Polish Precedent mare Polish Princess (GB). The first was the talented Polish Knight (Encosta de Lago), a $420,000 buy that won the Group II ATC Tulloch Stakes and was runner-up in the Group 1 ATC Derby.

The second was the Zabeel gelding Leebaz a four-time Group-winning millionaire purchased for $460,000 at the 2011 NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling sale.

A $200,000 purchase at the 2014 NZB Premier Yearling sale, Euro Angel is the fifth foal of Polish Princess, purchased by Windsor Park for 75,000 guineas out of the Meon Valley Stud draft at the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling sale.

Euro Angel has a 2yo sister to Mr Mozart named Angel Flight who is also in the Hawkes stable.

After missing in 2019, Euro Angel foaled a Pierro last spring colt and was covered by Snitzel.
