Birthday Card Stakes a Walk in the Park for Lonhro's Daughter Emanate

Mark Smith - Saturday March 19

A sister to Eureka Stud’s Group II Danehill Stakes winner Encryption, Godolphin’s Lonhro mare Emanate assured her status as a future prized broodmare when opening her stakes account in Saturday’s Group III Birthday Card Stakes at Rosehill and could not have been any more emphatic.

With Sam Clipperton in the saddle, the James Cummings-trained filly careered away for a four and a quarter length defeat of the Dream Ahead (USA) mare Marboosha with a further one and a quarter length back to the Frankel mare Steinem (GB) in third.

The 5yo daughter of Lonhro advances her record to six wins, three seconds and three thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $325,540.

“She is one of the best-bred mares going around today and that’s a huge result to get her first stakes win on the board,” Cumming said.

“We were gradually improving her fitness and she had a really good base coming into today. She trained unbelievably during the week. We could have nearly got her up to a Galaxy.

“She’s a beautiful sprinter. When she gets these sort of conditions it’s right in her sweet spot.”

Emanate is the second foal of outstanding racemare Guelph.

A half-sister to Group II Todman Stakes winner Ghibellines (Shamardal) out of the Group 1 winner Camarilla, Guelph was among the best of her generation at two and three.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel was a luckless second in the Gimcrack Stakes when on debut before earning a trip down south by winning at Warwick Farm.

She duly captured the fillies division of the Blue Diamond Prelude before finishing unplaced in the Blue Diamond.

Guelph proved that form wrong with a slashing fourth in the Golden Slipper Stakes, narrowly failing to give Exceed And Excel the trifecta after Overreach held the finish of Sidestep with the future Group 1 winner Sweet Idea in third. Guelph went on to win the next two legs of the 2yo Triple Crown.

After downing Scandiva and Overreach in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes, she rounded out her season by winning the ATC Champagne Stakes.

In her classic season, Guelph was beaten first-up in the Furious Stakes before reeling off wins in the Tea Rose Stakes, Flight Stakes and the Thousand Guineas at Caufield.

Guelph has a yearling filly by I Am Invincible named Controversy.

She visited Too Darn Hot (GB) last spring after missing to Lonhro in 2020.

Emanate becomes the 94th stakes-winner for Lonhro.
